As well as my extensive professional career, I empathise with the trials and tribulations of being in hospital, receiving a neurological diagnosis and commencing rehabilitation.
At the end of 2022, I was hospitalised for several months and diagnosed with a rare neurological condition. Initially I had to fight to be taken seriously and take control of my care to ensure I received a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
After months of being unable to stand and terrified I would be dependent on care for life, I responded to an invasive but suitable treatment. I was discharged from hospital to an inpatient neurological rehabilitation where I had to learn to stand, walk, toilet and shower myself again.
I was then discharged home and needed carers as I was only able to walk approximately 20 metres outside with 2 sticks and a massive fear of falling. I was very depressed, hopeless and exhausted. However, my own determination, courage, self compassion and specialist skillset led me to walk independently for miles without a mobility aid, use public transport, drive, socialise, take care of my beloved cat, Hamish and move back to Glasgow in 2024. I was also kindly supported by close friends, charities that I had referred myself to and my amazing mentors from Transport for London (TFL) who supported me in getting back to the navigating the tube, bus etc.
I still need to wear orthotics and have lower leg nerve damage plus some ankle instability. However, I am able to do what is important and meaningful to me.
My own healing journey combined with years of working within the NHS and private sector in senior and clinical lead posts mean I have a unique 360 degree perspective of being both therapist and client.
In addition to supporting individuals, I offer vocational rehab (back to work) services, training to organisations (e.g. hospices and care homes), clinical supervision to other therapists and health guidance to the general public. It would be a privilege to join you on this journey of healing.
